Narcolepsy and The Flu Vaccine

Researchers find that in some cases the 2009 Pandemic flu shot (Swine Flu Shot) led to narcolepsy in patients. Though the disorder showed up most often in young people, it also affects adults as well.   Most of the research focuses on a vaccine made by GlaxoSmithKline called Pandemrix, which is an “adjuvanted” vaccine.  Adjuvatned flu vaccines are primarily used in Europe, though the US FDA just recently approved the first adjuvanted flu vaccine.  A vaccine is adjuvanted when a substance is added to make it more potent and increase the body’s immune response to the vaccination. In the past, flu shots in the United States were NOT adjuvanted.  The vaccine is meant for the H5N1 avian influenza and is not expected to be released to the general public unless there’s a “worst case scenario” outbreak.

Is there a connection between getting Narcolepsy and getting the flu shot? Recent research shows that adults and children who got a 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine had higher risk of developing Narcolepsy.  Although the connection is especially present with children.  Narcolepsy is a rare sleep disorder that causes a person to fall asleep suddenly and unexpectedly.

What are the Symptoms of Narcolepsy?

The most obvious symptom of narcolepsy is extreme daytime sleepiness.  That’s when people fall asleep suddenly and unexpectedly during the day.  People who suffer from narcolepsy fall asleep as often as 10 times a day.  However, while extreme sleepiness is the most recognizable sign of narcolepsy, the disorder displays several other symptoms that might not be as obvious.  They include muscle weakness, vivid dreams, hallucinations, difficulty sleeping at night and even sleep paralysis, a condition that prevents you from moving or speaking while falling asleep or waking up.

What if You Have a Severe Reaction to a Vaccination?

Contact a lawyer who is experienced in representing patients in front of the Federal Vaccine Court. Filing a vaccine injury claim is an extremely complex and litigious process.  Furthermore, there are no legal costs for an injured patient represented by Maglio Christopher & Toale, P.A.  At the end of the case, our Law Firm asks the Court for reimbursement of the fees and costs incurred representing you.  This reimbursement is separate from any money you’re awarded by the Court, so you never have to share any portion of your money for damages with our law firm. Is it Possible to Recover from Narcolepsy?

Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for narcolepsy.  However, medication, lifestyle changes, and other therapies help relieve its symptoms.  Consequently, for many people forced to live with this disorder, it affects their entire life.  Most are unable to drive or work, and for children with narcolepsy, it unfortunately affects their ability to study or focus in school.
