Is there a connection between getting Narcolepsy and getting the flu shot? Recent research shows that adults and children who got a 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine had a higher risk of developing Narcolepsy, especially in children. Narcolepsy is a rare sleep disorder that causes a person to fall asleep suddenly and unexpectedly.
The Influenza (Flu Shot) Vaccine
Researchers have found that in some cases the 2009 Pandemic flu shot (Swine Flu Shot) led to narcolepsy in patients. The disorder showed up most often in young people, but it can affect adults. Most of the research focuses on a vaccine made by GlaxoSmithKline called Pandemrix, which is an “adjuvanted” vaccine used primarily in Europe. A vaccine is adjuvanted when a substance is added to make it more potent and increase the human body’s immune response to the vaccination. In the past, flu shots in the United States were NOT adjuvanted. However, the FDA just recently approved the first adjuvanted flu vaccine for use in the United States. The vaccine is meant for the H5N1 avian influenza and is not expected to be released to the general public unless there’s a “worst case scenario” outbreak.
What are the Symptoms of Narcolepsy?
The most obvious symptom of narcolepsy is extreme daytime sleepiness. That’s when people fall asleep suddenly and unexpectedly during the day. People who suffer from narcolepsy can fall asleep as often as 10 times a day. While extreme sleepiness is the most recognizable sign of narcolepsy, the disorder displays several other symptoms that might not be as obvious. They include muscle weakness, vivid dreams, and hallucinations, difficulty sleeping at night and even sleep paralysis, a condition that prevents you from moving or speaking while falling asleep or waking up.
Is it Possible to Recover from Narcolepsy?
Unfortunately, there is no cure for narcolepsy. However, medication, lifestyle changes, and other therapies can help relieve its symptoms. But for many people forced to live with this disorder, it affects their entire life. Most are unable to drive or work, and for children with narcolepsy, it can affect their ability to study or focus in school.
