He obtained his undergraduate and law degrees from Rutgers University. He distinguished himself in law school as a member of the Rutgers Law Journal, publishing on the topic of private Superfund litigation, and was a research assistant for a renowned constitutional law professor and author.
Since graduating from Rutgers Law School, John has practiced in a variety of litigation areas including medical malpractice defense, environmental law, contract, class action, and civil rights.
John also brings experience in patent infringement litigation, encompassing technologies that include sophisticated electronics and their operating and interfacing software. His practice focuses as well on the biological sciences, frequently at the molecular level, involving the interplay between pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and the complex pathways through which they operate on the human body. Mr. Caldwell’s patent litigation practice philosophy encourages clients to efficiently resolve patent issues affecting their businesses, but with an eye toward the litigation necessary to protect their property.
In addition, he has participated in special counsel investigations into alleged wrongdoing at major utility companies in the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. He was a key team member for Atlantic City in the development of former municipal lands into multi-billion dollar casino resorts. He has litigated and negotiated the settlement of dozens of complex civil cases. John became a partner at Maglio Christopher & Toale, P.A., in 2009.
John is a member of the Bars of the States of Florida, New York, and New Jersey. He is admitted to practice before the United States Courts of Appeals for the Federal and Third Circuits, the United States Court of Federal Claims, and the United States District Courts for the Middle District of Florida, the Southern District of New York and the District of New Jersey.
A veteran of the United States Coast Guard, John served from 1980 through 1984 aboard Coast Guard Cutters Red Oak and Duane. As a crew member on the Coast Guard Cutter Red Oak, his work entailed keeping aids to navigation on station and operating in the Port of Philadelphia and the Delaware River. After graduation from the Navy Quartermaster School, he was transferred to the Coast Guard Cutter Duane where he participated as a navigator in search and rescue, drug interdiction, and maritime law enforcement patrols.
John lives in Southwest Florida with his wife and two kids. He helps lead Boy Scout Troop 89 and is active in Temple Emanu-El.
